The SCPBC is modelled after the international City Nature Challenge (CNC). It is a 4 day citizen science project known as a bioblitz. It is a free, crowd-sourced collaboration aimed at documenting jurisdictional (parish or county) and ecoregional biodiversity while fostering a greater awareness and appreciation for nature. The SCPBC will eventually be composed of the 37 jurisdictions (counties and parishes) that comprise the entire EPA-designated Level III South Central Plains Ecoregion (AKA the Piney Woods), which is a richly forested area spanning parts of four U.S. states: Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and a small portion of Oklahoma. Link to Level III and IV Ecoregions by State: https://www.epa.gov/eco-research/level-iii-and-iv-ecoregions-state Initially, however (and as a proof of concept), the 2025 Fall SCPBC will only include the 13 Louisiana parishes that are in whole or part of the Tertiary Uplands Level IV ecoregion (one of 8 that comprise the South Central Plains): Caddo, Bienville, Bossier, Claiborne, De Soto, Jackson, Lincoln, Natchitoches, Ouachita, Red River, Sabine, Webster and Union. Hopefully, if there is enough support, projects for all the other parishes and counties will be created for the 2026 SCPBC.
