Alitaptap is a free, volunteer-run map of firefly sightings. Anyone can add one from a phone, in nine languages, with no account and no app to install. The project exists because of a gap that is easy to miss. Most firefly records in the world come from North America and Europe. In the tropics, where a great many firefly species live, records are scarce, and the ones that exist are often identified only as "a firefly" rather than to a species — because identifying one to species needs a second expert to agree, and there is frequently nobody available to be the second person. Alitaptap keeps those records instead of discarding them, and says plainly which are confirmed and which are not. Alongside the map there is a field guide, a guided walk-through for identifying flash patterns, seasonality charts showing which months fireflies have actually been recorded in for a place or a country, and a kit for anyone who wants to run a firefly walk of their own. Every record is published under a Creative Commons Attribution licence and can be downloaded in full as GeoJSON or CSV. Alitaptap is the Filipino word for firefly.
