The Bass Lake Trail System in the Superior National Forest is located about 5 miles north of the city of Ely, MN. It is managed by the Kawishiwi Ranger District of the USFS. Access is off the the Echo Trail north of Ely at the trailhead/parking lot. There are a total of 6.1 trail miles which include the Bass and Dry Lake loops. There are three dispersed campsites on the trail system, one on Dry Lake ands two on Bass Lake. There are no permits required to hike the trail, parking is free, and campsites are first come, first served. The ease of access makes the trail system popular for locals and visitors day hikes and is one of the main hiking trails in an area predominantly know as canoe country as it is adjacent to the BWCAW.
