We read a devastating fact: over 1,000,000 dogs are struck and killed by cars each year. Can you imagine the affect of losing a loved one in such a tragic way? Linwood Elementary's First Lego League Team, the RoboDogs, from Washington State, wonder about the circumstances in which these dogs are killed in car accidents. Are they off leash? Are kids walking them and lose control? Were these dogs trained properly? Did the dog leave on his own? These questions and more are driving the research of these ten 4th and 5th grade students.
Through this survey project, we hope to learn more about these 1,000,000 dog fatalities, and what, if anything, we can do to help. The statistics around dog vs automobile fatalities are staggering, and the students are determined to learn more about how and why these fatalities are happening, break the data down even further, connect with local experts and work together to try and solve this terrible problem.
