We’re excited to announce the launch of Clear Skies – Kiruna. It’s time to don your virtual snow-shoes, head to the Arctic and look up!
This new project asks volunteers to look at images of the night sky above Kiruna, Sweden and tell us whether the skies are clear or cloudy. Kiruna is situated in the high Arctic, where scientists study how solar storms heat and electrify our upper atmosphere. To do this, they use radar and specialist cameras which can measure the temperature and winds on the edge of space.
These cameras need clear skies to make successful measurements. To help with this, each night an all-sky-camera images the sky, generating many hundreds of thousands of images. Our small team of researchers from The University of Reading, The British Antarctic Survey and University College London, are using over twenty years’ worth of scientific data to understand how solar storms influence our atmosphere but the number of all-sky-camera images made during this time is too huge for our small team to handle.
By telling us when the skies are clear, you will enable the team’s research, while also experiencing the beauty of the Arctic skies, where spectacular displays of auroral lights dance among the stars.
