The CUBE (Collaboratively Understanding Biology Education) HomeLab Movement is a nationwide citizen-science initiative in India, spearheaded by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), TIFR in Mumbai. It empowers undergraduate students and educators to transform household items into fully functioning, frugal biology laboratories to conduct genuine scientific research. How the Movement Operates: - Frugal Science: Students replace expensive, sophisticated equipment with household alternatives—such as mobile phone cameras with hand lenses, and plastic containers for incubators. - Model Systems: Participants culture and study accessible local organisms such as fruit flies, earthworms, water fleas (Moina), and snails rather than relying on standard commercial lab specimens. - ChatShaala: A central pillar of the movement is the CUBE ChatShaala, an online platform where "Cubists" across India connect to share daily observations, discuss research papers, and troubleshoot their experiments together.
