Schneiderman Professor of Biology, emeritus, at Swarthmore College, where he teaches developmental genetics, embryology, and the history and critiques of biology. He is also a Finland Distinguished Professor, emeritus, at the University of Helsinki. Dr. Gilbert established the first website for a textbook, co-authored a digitally-based history of developmental biology, and has a 67-million-year-old turtle species named after him (Saxochelys gilberti.)
