See the Stars Where America Began Join Derrick Pitts, Chief Astronomer at the Franklin Institute, and Darlene Cavalier, Founder of SciStarter, and regional amateur astronomers, for a free nighttime stargazing event at Independence National Historical Park, right beside the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. April 13 at 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM Rain date: April 14 Held during International Dark Sky Week and Citizen Science Month, this special evening invites people of all ages to look up, learn something new, and take part in real science. Telescopes, astronomers, and volunteers will be on hand to help you explore the night sky up close. There will be family fun activities, giveaways, and America 250 window clings. It is also a great date night in one of the most historic places in the country. Guests will have the chance to take part in simple activities that support real scientific research, including measuring sky brightness to track light pollution and listening for migrating birds by identifying their nighttime calls. Scientists use this data to help birds reach their destinations safely and to better understand how light pollution affects people and wildlife. Every activity counts toward the goal of 2.50 Million Acts of Science during April’s Citizen Science Month, in celebration of America’s 250th birthday. It is a chance to be part of something meaningful right where it all began. Presented by SciStarter.org, which connects millions of people around the world to scientists who need their help, this event also celebrates a Philadelphia first. SciStarter was the first global citizen science website spanning all fields of science. SciStarter and partners coordinate Citizen Science Month each April.
