Join the Park & Wildlife Refuge for an insightful presentation about one of New England’s most iconic trees, the butternut. Butternut (Juglans cinerea) is a tree species under threat posed by the butternut canker fungus. This fungus disease has caused widespread mortality of butternut throughout its range in North America. The Charlotte Park and Wildlife Refuge (CP) is fortunate to have a limited population of surviving adult butternut trees. Most of these trees are severely diseased but have been part of a butternut research and restoration project since about 2010 in cooperation with the Charlotte Tree Warden (Larry Hamilton) at that time. Dale Bergdahl, retired UVM forest pathologist, shares the current research activities at refuge, which are part of an ongoing project with a focus on the threats to seedling regeneration posed by animal damage, vegetative competition, and fungal pathogens.
