Excavation at King John's Palace-Sherwood Forest
As legend has it, the outlaw Robin Hood hid out in Sherwood Forest to steal from the rich and give to the poor in the time of King John’s reign.
Legend or not, in Medieval times, King John and other English kings built an extensive palatial complex in Sherwood Forest. The area included a deer park and artificial lake in an idealised forest landscape for the kings and their guests to enjoy. These very real locations are being excavated by archaeologists—and they need your help!
You will work alongside archaeologists at the site of King John's palatial complex + one week of excavation + 5 days/7 nights of accommodations + breakfast daily and packed lunches. This field school on archaeological excavation methods through a mixture of classroom sessions and hands-on training. This course is suitable for all levels from beginner to experienced digger. Everyone is welcome, no previous knowledge or experience is required. You will be trained in the techniques of excavation, including: Stratigraphic Excavation | Artefact Recovery | Finds Processing | Pottery identification | The use of hand tools, trowels, spades and pick axes | Site Formation Processes | Context Sheet Recording | Site Photography | Site Grid and Trench | Archaeological Drawing | Recording & Storage.
