The decline of the saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) is a growing concern in the Sonoran Desert, where climate change, invasive species, and human activities threaten its survival. Urban expansion in places like Phoenix and Tucson increases temperatures through heat-absorbing surfaces such as asphalt and concrete. We believe this amplified heat stresses saguaros, making them more vulnerable to drought, disease, and poor growth. Help researchers conserve this iconic desert species by simply taking a photo of an unhealthy saguaro and uploading to the Saguaro Snapshot Challenge project on the iNaturalist app.
