The SC Adopt-a-Stream program seeks to protect SC's waterways through citizen volunteer stream water quality and habitat monitoring. A secure and mobile-friendly database houses collected data and shares information with resource managers (local authorities and state departments). These authorities can use citizen science results to make decisions to better manage waterways or address issues such as sewer spills, illegal dumping, stream restoration and more. The program is certified by US EPA and SC DHEC, and training events are held across the state to train volunteers in consistent, quality data collection. Trainings are free, and all volunteers must re-certify annually. Trainings are appropriate for middle school and older. All materials can be viewed at our website, including the monitoring handbook.
