The Apuane Follow-up project, promoted by Source International, is a significant evolution of the "Citizen Observatory of Apuan Waters." Through a strong citizen science approach, the initiative consolidates and expands the direct involvement of local communities in the environmental monitoring of water resources in the Apuan Alps — a crucial area for Tuscany’s water supply but threatened by intensive quarrying activities.
The project aims to train new citizen-scientists, extending monitoring activities to the Versilia river basin and introducing innovative tools for participatory mapping and data collection, such as the KoboToolbox online platform. Beyond technical training, the initiative fosters a grassroots culture of environmental responsibility, empowering local communities to protect their territory through accessible and shareable scientific data.
Through training sessions, field activities, and public dissemination events, Apuane Follow-up builds a bridge between science, citizenship, and the environment, making citizens active protagonists in monitoring and safeguarding natural resources. The project is supported by the Otto per Mille funds of the Waldensian Church.
