This cross-disciplinary study investigates the spatial relationship between surface permeability, vegetation cover, and thermal distribution across Philadelphia’s diverse urban landscape. By integrating "ground-truth" community science with existing remote sensing and GIS frameworks, the project seeks to bridge the resolution gap between high-level satellite imagery and the hyper-local lived experiences of the city’s residents. The research specifically examines how variations in impervious surfaces and vegetation cover influence the localized intensity of the urban heat island effect, air quality, and stormwater flooding. Ultimately, this initiative aims to validate and refine our understanding of urban climate risks by synthesizing multispectral data with citizen-led environmental monitoring to better understand the mechanisms driving environmental volatility in Philadelphia.
