Named for the Carthaginian goddess of protection, Tanit XR is a community-driven initiative that preserves endangered cultural heritage in Tunisia and beyond using 3D scanning, digital archiving, and immersive technologies like virtual and augmented reality. The project focuses on documenting historic sites and artifacts—many of which are at risk due to climate change, urban development, or limited preservation resources—and making them accessible to anyone, anywhere. Using tools like mobile photogrammetry, volunteers capture detailed 3D scans of archaeological sites. These scans are then processed, researched, and transformed into interactive digital experiences, including an online virtual museum and emerging VR/AR applications. The goal is not just preservation, but access: Tanit XR creates open, educational resources that allow people around the world to explore cultural heritage that might otherwise be difficult or impossible to visit. A core part of Tanit XR’s approach is that it is community-led and globally collaborative. Volunteers contribute in many ways, whether or not they are based in Tunisia or have technical experience.
