Adventure Scientists seek outdoor enthusiasts to scout and record observations of lingering Eastern Hemlock trees. Volunteers will identify candidate lingering hemlocks that have survived a woolly adelgid infestation. The data collected through this project will help inform conservation strategies, predict future changes in hemlock populations, and guide management decisions to protect these ecologically important trees. These surviving trees may possess genetic resistance to the pest and could be crucial for conservation efforts. From January 15, 2025 to March 31, 2025, volunteers will apply online to record observations. Volunteers complete online training and receive an equipment kit. Scout and identify “lingering” eastern hemlock trees within designated national forests. Document tree health and habitat characteristics using the TreeSnap app on smartphones. Assess signs of hemlock woolly adelgid infestation and record observations that will help researchers determine candidates for breeding programs.
