Professor Dan Milisavljevic of Purdue University will discuss plans for a coordinated global response to the next supernova in our Milky Way galaxy. The first alert that the "Big One" has happened will come from the Supernova Early Warning System (SNEWS), which is a network of neutrino detectors around the world. The neutrinos will arrive minutes to hours ahead of the first photons, which gives observers little time to locate and monitor the star as the explosion is happening. This once-in-a-century event will likely provide a spectacular cosmic fireworks display and will possibly be visible with the naked eye. It will also offer transformational science opportunities vitally dependent on contributions from volunteer astronomers. In this seminar, attendees will have an opportunity to contribute ideas on how to best react to SNEWS alerts, leveraging the community's geographic diversity and large numbers of small-aperture telescopes.
