Happy World Bamboo Day (WBD) 2026! We bamboo enthusiasts and conservation scientists at the California Institute of Environmental Design & Management (CIEDM) support and participate in the global celebrations of WBD 2026 with a local grassroots program of actions:
1. We registered with the Bamboo Research & Training Centre's World Bamboo Week to take part in its call for “Bamboo For The Future – From Tradition To Innovation”.
2. For capacity and network building purposes, we’ve watched and shared, with our networks, a 30-minute YouTube film about the innovative fact of bamboo being rapidly replacing traditional petroleum-based plastics through new bio-manufacturing methods that turn fast-growing plant fibers into strong, biodegradable materials.
3. I’ve written an article in Chinese titled “Enduring Bamboo Charm, Endless Vitality—Written Ahead of World Bamboo Day” to tell the story of the evolution of bamboo culture, and the vital importance of conserving and restoring bamboo forest ecosystems. As a tool of popular science for raising public awareness, the article will be published in the World Journal’s "Past and Present" section on September 16, 2026, and simultaneously featured on the website of the World Journal News. I'll spread the article upon its publication.
4. On WBD we’ll engage a landscape maintenance of the 50-foot long and densely grown bamboo fence at the Arcadia Ecohome. The vibrant living green fence grown in the understory of an oak tree, as shown in the attached picture, is a part of the Arcadia Ecohome Microforest, and presents the local landscapes of bamboo groves in Southern California.
5. We’ve engaged a social media campaign by making and spreading comments to news and articles about bamboos, such as this, and sharing what we do as grassroots for conservation of bamboo forest ecosystems. For example, we’ve joined the World Bamboo Organization‘s Facebook groups, read its news and made comments.
