Happy Butterfly Big Day (BBD) 2026 on Saturday September 12!
BBD is spearheaded by the Urban Butterfly Initiative (UBI), a community service organization calling for transforming urban green spaces into beautiful, butterfly-friendly habitats at global scale, and CIEDM is honored to serve as a UBI listed BBD Participating Organization in the US. We nature and butterfly lovers at CIEDM are taking local grassroots actions to support and participate in the global event with a couple of actions:
1. For capacity and network building, we’ve registered the CIEDM program with event and citizen science platforms such as LUMA, SciStarter and CitSci.
2. We are holding a nature/butterfly walk to enjoy our encounters at and around the Arcadia Ecohome Microforest, a pocket forest of 500+ trees, shrubs and vines in diversified plant species and wilding landscapes, as a Certified Pollinator Habitat, Certified Monarch Waystation, and Certified Wildlife Habitat.
3. The walk is also a citizen science based bioblitz walk through which we are observing and recording our spotting in the Microforest, an observatory/lab for several community/citizen science projects such as Journey North and Monarch Watch.
4. We’ll share our observations on data platforms such as iNaturalist for contributing to nature science findings and advancements.
5. As a BBD Participating Organization, we’ll also engage a social media campaign to raise awareness of BBD messages about the significance of protecting butterflies and conserving/restoring their habitats.
