CIEDM as a grassroots hold this event to support and take part in the following two awareness campaigns for environment protection and conservation around the same time period: The UN-supported World Environmental Education Day, 26 January 2026 and Winter Salt Week, 26-30 January 2026.
The event aims to raise awareness about the impacts of salt pollution on water environment from salt usages for snowmelt over roadways and for discharging salty water from water softeners, especially on freshwater sources in the mountain and foothill ecosystems. The event involves three sets of educational oriented actions:
Based on the Arcadia Ecohome, a observatory/lab for several citizen/community science projects, we’ll engage SKYWARD observations and recordings of rain and snow conditions of San Gabriel Mountains (SGM) with several tourist attractions located north of Arcadia, a foothill community of the SGM during the period of January 26-30.
We’ll share our report of observations with SKYWARN and Mountain Rain or Snow, SciStarter affiliated citizen science projects that CIEDM is participating in. In addition, we’ll provide information and community watch warning about possibility of salt pollution uses in roadway clearance for maintaining accessibility to recreational facilities in the SGM.
We’ll also engage an educational social media campaign to raise public awareness of those campaigns and of their campaigning messages, along the impacts of salt pollution from snowmelt and water softening applications on our water environment including the mountain and foothill ecosystems. We’ll also share our knowledge about reduction solutions to salt pollution through the campaign.
