Happy International Day of Light 2026!
As a project volunteer of the UNESCO Green Citizens initiative and a voluntary Advocate for DarkSky International, I engaged an all-day event to celebrate three conservation related awareness campaigns all taken place on Saturday 16 May 2026 – the UNESCO International Day of Light (IDL), National Love a Tree Day. and National River Cleanup Day, In the daylight, we’ve done preparatory work for tree planting and cleanups of the Ocean Friendly Garden in the Arcadia Ecohome Microforest. With the theme for IDL 2026 being "Light For A Sustainable Future", we CIEDM grassroots engaged a nightfall bioblitz walk in the woods at the Microforest, a Certified Wildlife Habitat and a Certified Pollinator Habitat, for stargazing, spotting of nocturnal creatures, and enjoying the nightscapes with only few solar-powered garden path lights on. We turned off all interior & exterior lights for one hour as we did in past years for participating in Earth Hour in March and walked in the woods of the Microforest to experience the natural nightscapes & scound-scapes in the woods and enjoy stargazing and listening to natural sounds. The 1-hour starlit journey through nature reconnects us with the beauty of nature as natural lights and sounds transform the pocket forest into an enchanting nighttime escape and it also brings back my memories of the lecture journey to China in 2015, the International Year of Light, taught and lectured in several campuses and professional meetings on the subject of eco-friendly nightscaping for mitigating urban light pollution and preserving ecotourism resources.
