In light of 2026 being the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development (IVY 2026), an UN campaign for recognizing and boosting volunteerism‘s crucial role in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) launched officially on International Volunteer Day on 5 December 2025, CIEDM by its 2026 New Year Resolutions has committed to engage voluntary actions for fostering sustainable development. One of the CIEDM activities for IVY 2026 kicked off in January is a voluntary plalking to take place at public premises as we walk around the Arcadia Ecohome on Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. Day, Monday, 19 January 2026. The MLK Day is a federal holiday celebrating the civil rights leader’s life and legacy and is also an official national day of service. Known as MLK Day of Service, it encourages all Americans to volunteer in community services and improving their communities through volunteering. In California, the California Volunteers/Office of the Governor is promoting and charging local events such as with LA Works to celebrate this special day. Serving as a Partner of the California Volunteers, to take part in the charge, I’ve scheduled the CIEDM plalking to pickup trashes as we walk around the City of Arcadia’s Camino Grove neighborhood in the afternoon, and then sort out recyclables from the collected trashes at the Ecohome’s Recycling Collection Center for waste management purposes . With the two-hour plalking, we would remove trashes from public streets and thus reduce stormwater and plastic pollution into the public waterways and eventually draining into the Pacific Ocean that harms we humans and aquatic/marine creatures residing in/along the banks/ coasts. Thus, this CIEDM voluntary action serves also as our participation in the global celebration on 19 January 2026 for the High Seas Treaty taking effect to protect marine biodiversity. In addition, we’ll engage an online action of social media campaign for raising awareness of the IVY and MLK Day 2026, and what we do through our grassroots actions at and around the Ecohome.
