SaveTheHives is a free, volunteer-run citizen science project mapping non-managed honey bee colonies across North America. Over 1,150 legacy records dating back to 2008 are already on the map.
Our focus: colonies that persist winter after winter with zero human treatment, because each one is a real candidate for understanding how honey bees might survive without constant chemical support. Right now, 1,149 of our 1,158 logged colonies have never been checked since they were first found, so confirming existing records is currently a bigger need than finding brand-new ones.
Anyone can log a wild hive or confirm one that's already on the map. No experience or equipment required. Scientific framing reviewed and approved by Dr. David Tarpy, NC State University Scholar Professor and Extension Apiculturist, who serves as scientific advisor.
